Chiropractic specific questions answered

What is an Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a direction, applied to a joint that is subluxated, "locked up", or not moving properly. This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous system function and improved health.

There are many different ways to adjust the spine. The doctor uses his hands or a specially designed instrument to apply a gentle force to a specific area of the spine.

After years of training and clinical experience your chiropractic doctor becomes highly skilled in the delivery of a variety of adjusting approaches. Regardless of the technique used, each chiropractic adjustment is tailored to suit the patient's age, size, and unique spinal problem.

Can I Adjust Myself?

Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction, to a specific spinal joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself.

It is possible to turn or bend or twist certain ways to create a "popping" sound, similar to the sound that sometimes accompanies a Chiropractic adjustment. Unfortunately, this type of joint movement is usually counterproductive, often making an already unstable area of the spine even more unstable. Adjusting the spine is not for amateurs.

The best way to enjoy the helpful benefits of Chiropractic is to receive an adjustment from your qualified Doctor of Chiropractic.

What is a VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION?

The loss of normal motion or position of the bones of the spine is known as a vertebral subluxation. Once abnormal motion occurs it sets off a chain reaction which affects movement, nerves, muscles, soft tissues and finally the bones of the spine. Doctors of chiropractic refer to this as the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

Instead of treating your symptoms your Doctor of Chiropractic is primarily interested in detecting, reducing, and preventing the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. So how do you become subluxated? This happens when spinal bones loose their normal position and motion from Physical, Emotional or Chemical imbalances such as:

  • Physical - From incorrect lifting, bad posture, falls and accidents.
  • Emotional - The main three stresses being family, work and relationships.
  • Chemical - Both internal and external. Internal chemical stress comes from the foods we eat or bad habits such as smoking or drinking too much. External chemical stresses such as environmental pollutants or passive smoking.

The Vertebral Subluxation Complex Consists of Five Components:

  • Spinal Kinesiopathology (Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones)
This occurs when spinal joints become fixated or stuck (they do not go out of place) and they are not moving enough, they force other joints to move too much. This problem can distort normal spinal curves and compromise proper spinal functioning.

  • Neuropathophysiology (Abnormal nerve system function)
Our nerve tissue is so important that it is protected by bone. The skull encases the brain, and 24 moving bones of the spinal column protect the spinal cord. The nerve system controls every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. It is the master control system of all systems in your body, and your health.
When there is improper spinal function it can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. This resulting nerve tissue dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body.
  • Myopathology (Abnormal muscle function)
When muscle function is impaired from too much nerve supply, muscles that support the spine can become tight, or go into spasm. While muscles that receive too little nerve supply can weaken, waste away, or atrophy. This can cause abnormal curves of your spine.
  • Histopathology (Abnormal soft tissue function)
When there is spinal joint malfunction, the discs, ligaments, and other connective tissues are affected also. This is accompanied by inflammation and swelling which causes a rise in temperature. Discs can bulge, tear and herniate, while other soft tissue may suffer permanent damage.
  • Spinal Pathophysiology (Abnormal function of the spine and body)
When there is malfunction or trauma to a joint, one of the ways the body responds is to stabilize the area by growing new bone or bone spurs. This is commonly known as osteoarthritis and it is more correctly know as Degenerative Joint Disease (D.J.D.). This is a problem, which has been ignored or neglected over the years, and it is not part of the aging process. Therefore it can be prevented. This is just one reason to have children checked for vertebral subluxations.

Why Do Children Need Chiropractic Care?

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked for the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

Later, learning to walk, ride a bicycle and other childhood activities can cause the spinal problems. While a bandage and some comforting words can help a skinned knee, the unseen damage to the child's spine and subluxation is the unique domain of the doctor of chiropractic.

Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off as "growing pains" can often be traced to the spine. Regular Chiropractic adjustments can identify these subluxations and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults.

Naturally, chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to a childs spine. Most parents report that their children enjoy their Chiropractic adjustments and seem healthier than other children.

Remember... Early detection is the key to prevention.
